What is a Congenital Heart Disease?

A Congenital Heart Disease also known as CHD is a a condition that occurs when a heart defect forms whilst the baby is still in the mother's womb. The defects can involve the walls and valves of the heart as well as the arteries and veins near the heart.

What types of heart defects can be present at birth?

Some heart defects that can be present birth include defective vessels, leaky valves and a hole in the heart.

How can CHD be treated?

CHD treatments include : medications to lower blood pressure and control heart rate, heart devices, catheter procedures, and surgery. If the case is more serious than others a heart transplant may be required.

What are the symptoms of CHD?

Symptoms of CHD consists of abnormal heart rhythms, blue-tinted skin, shortness of breath, failure to develop normally, and swollen body tissue or organs.

Some facts about CHD:

  • CHD is the most common type of birth defect

  • CHD in general is rare and there are fewer than 200,000 US cases per year
